contemporary pop-art painting being painted in studio

On this artist webpage you are invited to follow the work of this female,
young and upcomming contemporary painter.

While studying fine arts in her native country, Holland,
she was offered an Erasmus Grand to go and study abroad at
another University of Fine Arts within Europe.

She elected the University of Valencia and soon found out that she had more in common with the philosophy and preferences of the spanish people and art-students then with the colleagues back home.

The change of geographic place of living and working is easily recognizable in her work, especially the mediterranean light has made a great change on Monique’s  color-palette.

Even though Monique graduated in the Fine Arts in 1999
it is only recently that she has been focusing mainly on painting,
this change came around the year 2005/2006 when the need for color and direct expression became more and more urgent.
Before that she made ceramic sculptures (her mayor at the “Hogeschool voor de kunsten en design ´s-Hertogenbosch”) and chinese ink drawings on paper.

The influence of these chinese ink drawings is still visible through the drippings she applies in her paintings.

Her style has always been on the edge of figurative and abstract art,
some might even say that many of her sculptures were mainly abstract,
but the artist insists that her work has always been narrative and readable.

Nowadays this painter investigates the boundaries of plain color-fields,
held together by roughly dripped painting as contours and the intuition of
the eye of the beholder to formulate the content of the artwork,
whether this is a portrait or human figure.

The Barcelona based painter Monique hopes that you will enjoy her webpage and the exposed paintings in which you can still find her expressionist temperament, contra positioned by delicate forms and colors.
